Roland DGA Unveils New Wet and Dry Mills for the Production of Precision Dental Prosthetics

Irvine, Calif., Sept. 17, 2015 – Roland DGA Corporation, a leading provider of dental milling devices, announced today the simultaneous release of its new 4-axis wet dental mill, the DWX-4W, together with its latest 5-axis dry mill, the DWX-51D. With the addition of the DWX-4W, Roland now offers the dental industry the option of a comprehensive, two-mill combination capable of producing a wide range of dental prosthetics from a variety of materials.

According to Brian Brooks, Roland DGA’s senior product manager, Roland’s multiple device solution – combining the DWX-4W wet dental mill with a state-of-the-art dry mill like the DWX-51D – offers significant advantages over single machines that offer both dry and wet milling. “The beauty of our two- machine system is you can perform both wet and dry milling at the same time, as well as process different materials, without a changeover,” he said. “In addition to saving time, effort and money, this ensures superior results by allowing each machine to specialize in its intended function.”

Since its launch in 2010, Roland’s DWX series has gained industry recognition for its 5-axis capabilities, ease-of-use, robust reliability and open architecture. The DWX-series quickly became an industry standard with over 3,000 units sold worldwide. “The open architecture of Roland’s DWX mills is just one of the reasons these devices are so popular, noted Brooks. “Users aren’t locked in to one manufacturer with our milling machines. They can choose the type of software, scanner or materials they want to use.”

 “The new DWX-51D is the culmination of more than three decades of proven Roland 3D milling technology,” noted Brooks. We also based the design of this next-generation device on extensive feedback obtained from current Roland DWX-50 users. “This enabled us to create the ultimate dry dental mill – a machine that’s not only advanced, precise and efficient, but also incredibly easy to use.”

Roland’s DWX-51D dental milling machine is equipped with a 10-station automatic tool changer (ATC), a new C-clamp with torque wrench for easier loading of materials, and an expanded Virtual Machine Panel (VPanel) with built-in maintenance routine. It’s capable of producing copings, crowns, full bridges and abutments and other prosthetics from zirconia, wax, PMMA, composite resin, PEEK and gypsum with unparalleled speed and precision. Simultaneous 5-axis machining with 360-degree rotation in clockwise or counterclockwise directions (A axis) and 30-degree tilting toward the front or back (B axis) supports complex restorations with undercuts. For higher quality output, the DWX-51D employs an improved airflow system, which boosts vacuum performance and prevents dust from building up in the milling area. The 10-station ATC enables multiple tooling options as well as unattended operation from start to finish. For optimum convenience, a color-coded light informs the technician of the machine’s operational status. “Because many labs run their machines unattended, we also equipped the DWX-51D with an automated e-mail notification system,” explained Brooks. “The user receives an e-mail if an error occurs, or when a job has been completed.”  

Previewed at major dental conferences earlier this year, the Roland DWX-4W wet dental mill is specially designed for milling glass ceramics and composite resins, which are popular with both dentists and patients for producing aesthetically superior crowns, inlays, onlays, and veneers. In addition to milling on X, Y and Z axes, the DWX-4W rotates pin-type blocks 360 degrees on a fourth axis (A axis) to support undercuts. The DWX-4W also features a high-performance Jaeger DentaDrive spindle that operates at speeds of up to 60,000 RPM for precision milling and unmatched reliability. A multi-pin clamp lets you mill up to three different pin-type materials simultaneously, while a 4-station ATC automatically changes grinding burs as needed without interrupting production. The DWX-4W is also equipped with a fully-integrated pump and coolant system with a slide-out container for simple maintenance.

Both the DWX-4W and DWX-51D boast touch-button controls and automated milling, so they are simple to operate. “Users will find the workflow to be easy, smooth and seamless,” said Brooks. “Just install the material and milling tools into the machine, use the VPanel to configure the settings from your computer, and with a few mouse clicks, the precision milling begins.”  

Roland’s new dental mills feature a slim, attractive design, but the beauty of these machines is much more than skin deep. Unsurpassed performance, accuracy and efficiency also come standard. Ball screws for the X, Y and Z axes help maximize accuracy and reliability. Multicast capability is yet another extremely useful DWX milling machine feature. Users can connect up to four respective DWX machines to a single system for centralized control from one PC.
